Building on the success of the first "Sound of Speed" event in 2006, the 139th Airlift Wing, City of St. Joseph, Buchanan County, and St. Joseph Metro Chamber joined forces to formally host and support the StJDC Charitable Fund for the 2010 rendition of the show. Featuring the United States Navy "Blue Angels" Flight Demonstration Team, the 2010 "Sea Power Edition" of the Sound of Speed reached even higher levels of community support and overall success, garnering the 2010 Dick Schram Memorial Community Relations Award from the International Council of Air Shows.
In 2012 the Sound of Speed brings St. Joseph the "International Edition." Celebrating the unique contributions and history of global airpower, by both Allies and adversaries, the 2012 event will host the Canadian Forces Skyhawks Parachute Demonstration Team, former Soviet aircraft (including a dynamic Mig-17 performance), a Canadian Wing Walking team, a formation of Chinese training aircraft, and other static display and flying performances by foreign built and/or flown aircraft. The Advanced Airlift Tactical Training Center, based right here in St. Joseph, plays host annually to combat transport aircraft from around the globe. Transport aircraft from Germany, Spain, and Italy will be on static display for the public to observe first hand. Check out all of our anticipated performances below.
The St. Joseph Development Corporation Charitable Fund, an outreach of the St. Joseph Metro Chamber, is the non-Federal sponsor of the Sound of Speed Air Show and Open House. After the fund's inaugural 2010 event, over $38,000 dollars was distributed to over 20 different non-profit groups and local charities; many of whom supported the show by volunteering at concessions and merchandise booths. In 2012, we are initiating the "Hear Us" Campaign. Still in the early stages of development, the "Hear Us" campaign will give local residents a unique opportunity to support the Sound of Speed financially while also gaining a campaign T-shirt, reserved event seating, and other special perks for themselves. All proceeds from the "Hear Us" campaign will go directly into the contingency fund, and we are excited to unveil the project sometime in mid to late March. Please keep checking back for details!
